Did you remember to get your Goodnight Moon stamps?
Obviously, I didn't sleep on this drop...
Apparently, everyone secretly hates my guts because NOBODY notified me about the Goodnight Moon stamp pre-sale! My phone was blowing up when USPS announced the upcoming release back in January, so why is it suddenly crickets? Let this be a reminder to always look out for yourself… I’m an only child so this has never really been an issue for me unlike some of you. Thankfully, my mom is always on top of it, but my friend Hafeezah also stepped up and secured some sheets for my birthday. (Side note: For anyone that forgot, all will be forgiven if you gift me these stamps.)
Anyway, my most loyal readers will recall the Gore lore around this iconic children’s book—I had the opportunity to transcend to Margaret Wise Brown and Clement Hurd’s realm through the “Goodnight House” exhibit at Fort Makers in 2021, still one of my all-time favorite moments in NYC. Even though I have a solid amount of Goodnight Moon stamps on the way, I marched over to my local post office to buy more for my collection. I’m planning on framing one of the sheets, but will definitely put the rest to good use!
Ahead of this release, I managed to get in touch with a spokesperson for USPS who answered my most pressing questions. (Apparently, the process from when a stamp is first presented, researched, developed and then produced can take up to three or more years prior to the proposed issuance year.) Scroll down for the short and sweet convo! :-)
I’ve never seen so much buzz about a Stamps Forever release until now, people have never been more excited for a stamp to drop! Did you expect this level of virality?
Some stamp subjects seem to have a wider appeal than others and tend to resonate with a broader audience. In the beginning stages of a stamp’s development, it is hard to predict which subjects will have that broader appeal. We are always delighted when customers get excited about a new stamp issuance. We strive to create a stamp program that is appealing and interesting to the American public.
Why do you think Goodnight Moon resonates with so many consumers right now?
Probably because the nostalgic appeal this stamp has for people. People who had this book read them as children are now reading it to their own children.
Given that we live in a very digital world, are you surprised to see people curating their own stamp collections?
No, not at all. Like other forms of collecting, stamp collecting has been around for decades. Each stamp is a miniature piece of art to be admired and enjoyed over and over again. There is a bit of nostalgia in collecting and a thrill while hunting down a hard-to-find stamp.
There are so many iconic stamps that I didn’t know were released like The Snowy Day for example. Why are they only offered for a limited time?
The Postal Service issues new stamps each year in certain quantities. Once the quantity of an individual stamp sells through, the Postal Service does not reprint. We aim to print enough of each stamp issuance to last about two years.
Love this!
